Thanksgiving break here I come!

Who is excited for Thanksgiving break? It does mean more snow, but it’s a sign the semester is coming to an end!  I sure am looking forward to it!  I know there will be a lot to accomplish before I get to drive home Tuesday night, but the few days off will be worth it completely. I have a lot to be thankful for coming home this year. I think this time of year we can really focus of being grateful for the people who fill our lives. It can be easy to get lost in everyday life and hopefully each one of us can enjoy some turkey, but enjoy even more who we are surrounded with at the table! On this Thanksgiving Day, I am attending a yoga class at the studio I taught at over the summer. They are having a donation class, so all I have to do is bring a canned good! I think it is a great idea, that I have the opportunity to help others and my own body at the same time. It’s easy to get out of your normal routine when there is a holiday- especially a holiday that associates with delicious food, so make sure you take care of yourself, maybe do some morning yoga and give thanks!

Midterms are right around the corner, I hope everyone is keeping up! I think organic chemistry class is what is taking up most of my time, and I wish it wasn’t. Luckily, practicing yoga has been keeping me feeling alright about these stressful weeks ahead of me.  My parents came to visit me last weekend too! It was great to see them and I got to take a break from trying to understand stereochemistry and practicing naming compounds. We drove down to Saugatuck because it seemed to be “pet friendly” for my crazy canine, Bacci. He always has a lot of energy  when he meets new people, so he definitely kissed everyone he met! Oh and by the way, “Bocce” in Italian means “to kiss” so it is very fitting. I hope everyone reading this also has something that can keep them calm and collected during stressful times! See you around campus, and keep smiling!  Feel free to come by one of my yoga classes.  I teach Mondays 11am Yoga Flow and Tuesdays at 5pm & 6pm - Yoga Flow and Restorative Yoga.

This was a busy week for students moving in. It took me back to the day when
I had to move-in to Kistler as a freshman. Cars lined up, people everywhere,
it was crazy, and being new I felt so out of place. As soon as we drove up,
BAM! Football players were right there ready to haul my things up to my room
(Thank God!). I had a refrigerator, T.V., clothes, bags, etc, and I lived on
the third floor. I remember how nice it was to have help and now it was our
turn to help the new comers. As soon as they pulled up we helped students
and their families carry their belongings from their car to their dorm room.
Of course, we had to compete with the football players who seemed to come
out of nowhere, but we were able to help as many as we could. Along with
helping them move their belongings, we set up an information table to inform
new freshman of what Campus Recreation had to offer. We had many people sign
up for our email list and we were able to interest them in checking out our
group exercise classes, intramural sports and all of the other things Campus Recreation has to offer.

See you around the Rec Center!

Sunny Hartford

I am in Hartford, Connecticut...yes, I said Hartford, Connecticut - to attend the National Fitness & Wellness Institute.  This is such a great conference because it allows me to talk to all of the other people who do what I do at universities all across the country.  We've covered Group Exercise, Mind/Body, Wellness, new trends, new ideas, social media, and more.

I have had the pleasure to get ideas from staff at North Carolina State University, Virginia Tech, Purdue, University of Nebraska, Princeton, Central Michigan, Saginaw Valley, and Texas A & M - just to name a few.  It's amazing that I can get ideas from all across the country by attending this conference.

I've already got so much I want to do to improve the delivery of services and the development of staff.  I only have one more day - so much more to do!  August is right around the corner.

Yes! We have one follower.  Wait.....she works for us.  Welcome Brooke Derouin our Graduate Assistant at Campus Recreation.  We are busy planning some really great things for next year.  Some exciting news to share: the Recreation Center will be equipped with all new selectorized weight equipment for the Fall 2011 semester.  It's going to be so sweet that you won't even want to stay home and watch Jersey Shore.  You will just have to come over and check it out.  I can't believe it's Memorial Day weekend in a few days.  Be safe and have fun!  Laura

Ok, we have a blog.  So, as my co-worker Jake asked: what are you going to blog about?  Yikes.  Even he is wondering what I could possibly have to say.  Luckily, I won't be doing most of the talking, although I am never short on an opinion - on anything.  Our blog is going to cover anything and everything related to fitness, wellness, intramural sports, student life, and general goings-on within our department and field.

We would love to hear from you if there are topics you would like to hear about.  Are there fitness trends you would like to know more about?  Have you seen some crazy idea on an infomercial and wonder if it's worth it?  And what is up with those shoes that look like you're barefoot?  Anyway, we will have our graduate assistants, personal trainers, instructors, interns and fieldwork students writing for us.  They will be much more interesting to hear from anyway.
